JANUARY 13 COURT HEARS ASSAULT AND BATTERY CASE, REPORTED BY ALEH VOLCHAK, HEAD OF LIQUIDATED LEGAL ASSISTANCE TO PUBLIC NGO
Aleh Volchak, who in September 2003 became victim of the attack of a stranger, managed to lead the case to the stage of the trial. RFE/RL reports, this is the only case of many incidents of opposition activists being beaten, heard by court.
During the last few years many outstanding people became victims of street offenders. Such incidents happened to politician Anatol Labedzka, theater producer Valery Mazynski, academician Radzim Haretski, and rector of Belarusian State University Vasil Strazhaw.
Well-known human rights activist Aleh Volchak was attacked in September 2003, in broad daylight. According to Volchak, the offender did not even try to hide himself. Volchak managed to note down the number of the license plate of the offender’s car. January 13, almost 4 months since the incident, the court finally started the hearing. Aleh Volchak believes, if not for his professional experience of criminal investigation (he used to work as a prosecution investigator), this simple case would have never been heard by court.
