The number of death penalties decreased in Belarus in comparison with the last decade of the 20th century. "If in 1996 courts made about 40 death sentences, in 2001 only 5 death sentences were carried out", -- said Uladzimir Kowchur, head of the Committee for Enforcement of Sentences at the Ministry of Internal Affairs, on 24 January.
During the first month of 2003 one death sentence was carried out.
