BELARUSIAN LANGUAGE SOCIETY SUITS JUSTICE MINISTRY IN SUPREME COURT, APPEALING AGAINST WARNING. LAWYER OF THE HUMAN RIGHTS CENTER "VIASNA" ULADZIMIR LABKOVICH REPRESENTS BLS INTERESTS IN COURT.
The Ministry of Justice issued an official warning to BLS, which consists of several parts. One reason for the warning was installation of the memorial Cross of Martyrdom in Lida district (the cross is dedicated to representatives of Lida nobility, perished in the 17th century). The Ministry of Justice decided that the Belarusian Language Society had no right to install the cross.
Besides that, BLS was accused of not using the full name of the organization on its ads in Minsk subway (BLS advertised the Month of Belarusian Language as part of its campaign to promote the usage of the Belarusian language). However, this accusation is groundless, because each ad had a big-size symbol of BLS, which contains the full name of the organization, as it stands in the Statute.
The Belarusian Language Society appealed against the warning to the Supreme Court. The interests of the organization are represented by Uladzimir Labkovich, lawyer of the Human Rights Center "Viasna". The Supreme Court will open hearings on 27 January.
