Hrodna human rights defenders: repressions against civil society activists are increasing
December 11, Hrodna human rights activists held a round table dedicated to summarize the results of the year, discuss pressing issues and the difficulties faced by human rights activists.
It was noted that the activities of civil society during the year had become considerably more complicated, the repressions against social activists were increasing, and it became virtually impossible to obtain permission from the authorities to hold a public event on the street. In Hrodna region, the authorities use slightest pretexts to punish activists with fines with the assistance of the police and courts. In this situation, human rights activists are trying to help the people in appealing the unfair verdicts and seeking their abolition.
Human rights activists presented their vision of the situation of human rights in the region. They discussed the most pressing issues, one of the nearest will be pre-Christmas campaign "Write a postcard to a political prisoner".
The discussion was attended by human rights activists Viktar Sazonau, Raman Yurhel, Uladzimir Khilmanovich, Eduard Dmukhouski and other social activists.
