Press conference on arbitrary detention of opposition activists
Due to the aggravation of the problem of arbitrary detentions and arrests of opposition activists, October 15 the Human Rights Center "Viasna" holds a press conference to announce a human rights campaign on this issue and present a report prepared in cooperation with the FIDH.
The meeting with journalists will be held in the office of the Human Rights Center "Viasna" (Miarzhynski Street 8-26 at 11 a.m.
The press conference will be attended by the deputy head of the Human Rights Center "Viasna" Valiantsin Stefanovich, an expert on the prison system Pavel Sapelka. The participation of an activist holding a record on the number of days spent under administrative arrest this year is expected as well.
The problem of the systemic use of preventive arrests of activists by the authorities in Belarus on the eve of important public events is raised in a report prepared on the results of the research mission of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) and the Human Rights Center "Viasna", conducted in May-June 2014. The report was presented to international community at the Conference on the Human Dimension of the OSCE in Warsaw on September 24.
