Readers defend “Hazeta Slonimskaya”

On 9 September the member of the Slonim
organization of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Ales Maisiuk filed
an application to the Slonim District Executive Committee to get a
permission for the picket he intended to hold on 29 September in the
city park.
According to Mr. Maisiuk, the picket will be
dedicated to the protection of “Hazeta Slonimskaya” and the right
of residents of the Slonim area to subscribe to the independent
edition at the Belarusian post and buy it at the newsstands of
“Belsayuzdruk”.
Slonim residents have been trying to
protect their right to subscribe to “Hazeta Slonimskaya” and buy
it at the newsstands for several years already. This year more than
500 people signed appeals to various state instances in which the
authorities were asked to include the newspaper in the subscription
catalog of the Belarusian post and let it be sold at the newsstands
of “Belsayuzdruk”. However, the local authorities continue
ignoring these requests.
