Human rights defenders issue a statement concerning the cracking of the website of Mahiliou "Viasna" branch
In the evening of 2 April unidentified
persons acquired unauthorized access to the website of Mahiliou
branch of the Human Rights Center "Viasna" and published an
article with threats to indpendent journalist Ales Burakou on behalf
of human rights defender Barys Bukhel. The unknown offenders hacked
the website security and changed the administrator's
passwords.

and Barys Bukhel issued a special statement on this occasion:
"As
it is known, recently the website of Mahiliou branch of the Human
Rights Center "Viasna" suffered a hacker attack which
resulted in a temporary loss of control over its content. Some
articles, allegedly written by the well-known Mahiliou human rights
defender Barys Bukhel, were published at the website as front-page
news.
We won't deal with the analysis of these texts or
disprove their content. What we consider as necessary is to state
that Barys Bukhel has no relation to them and that the "article"
was published at the website without our knowledge.
We offer
our apologies to visitors of our website and personally to our friend
Ales Burakou, whose name was mentioned in a negative context in the
"article" published at the website.
We also have to
say the following to those who like hiding behind someone else's
backs: thank you for the free promotion of our work, but we are
disappointed at your primitivism. If you really have something to say
– say it openly. We are open to discussions and worthy thoughts and
ideas can be published at the website of Mahiliou branch of HRC
"Viasna". However, any discussion must be held decently,
leaving alone the admissibility of criminal actions.
We call
on the readers of the website of Mahiliou branch of HRC "Viasna"
to continue using it as a non-censored informational source about
human rights news events in Mahiliou region."
Computer
specialists are now dealing with the restoration of the website and
regaining the control over it.
