Homel NGOs to establish organization on disregard of decisions of the UN Human Rights Committee
On 12 February in Homel there took
place a meeting of the civil and political activists, the violation
of whose rights by Belarus had been officially confirmed by decisions
of the UN Human Rights Committee or whose complaints are pending at
the Committee.
The problem of the refusal of the Government of
Belarus to implement the decisions of the UN Human Rights Committee
and the possible actions to correct this situation have been
discussed at the meeting.
It was proposed to establish a
national public organization which would deal with looking for the
methods to change the practice of neglect of the undertakings under
the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by Belarus.
The organization is expected to unite the efforts of all
persons who have the appropriate decisions of the Committee at hand,
as well as those who has just filed complaints or are simply
interested in this issue and are ready to work for its solution. At
present, this concerns many well-known public and political activists
of Belarus whose complaints have been considered, that's why the
initiators of the organization count on the future cooperation within
the framework of the organizing committee and the organization
itself.
The meeting participants proposed to include some of
the present people in the organizing committee: Leanid Sudalenka (the
Homel Center of Strategic Suits, Homel), Viktar Karniayenka (the
co-chairman of the campaign "For Fair Elections", Minsk)
and Pavel Levinau (a member of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee,
Vitsebsk).
