Judge Alena Tsyhankova of Vitsebsk Chyhunachny District Court has fined Alena Semenchukova BYR 175,000 for staging a picket of support to the imprisoned opposition activist Siarhei Kavalenka in the city center on 20 March, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports.
Mrs. Semenchukova was found guilty of violating mass events legislation for holding a banner “Freedom for Siarhei Kavalenka!”
“The girl admitted she took the banner out to Vitsebsk busiest street. However, she did not agree that she had violated the law by doing that, as she argued that she simply made use of her right to freedom expression”, said local human rights defender Pavel Levinau, who attended the trial.
