Mahiliou: authorities ban action of solidarity with political prisoners
Representatives of the democratic movement in Mahilou failed to get permission to hold a rally to support political prisoners.
To carry out a rally in Belarus, one needs to agree it with police, medical services and the road and bridge organization and then get permission in the city executive committee. Mahiliou activists did not have to apply to the city executive committee, because they met problems in police.
The rally organizer, Anatol Zauyalau, documents from the road and bridge organization and medical services were received during several hours, but policemen refused to permit the event.
“Police began to say that it takes a week to make an agreement. In this case, we would not have time to prepare all documents by the day of holding the rally. Then a police officer ordered his subordinate to deal with our case,” the activist said in an interview to the European Radio for Belarus.
Mahiliou oppositionists are not going to carry out a
rally, but they will apply for holding new public actions. They also intend to
complain to the regional prosecutor’s office at behavior of the Leninski
district police chief and the chief of the Mahilou City Police Department.
