Subbotniks are a
well-known Soviet tradition which is being revived by the Belarusian
authorities. Usually they are held on Saturdays and the people who take part in
them (usually on “voluntary” basis aren’t paid any money for their work).
For instance, a nationwide subbotnik will take place on 16 April, and on 9
April there was another subbotnik, within the limits of Mahiliou.
According to workers of Building Trust
#12 and Pramzhylbud, the local authorities found an
interesting way to ensure their on 16 April: those workers who don’t come to the
“voluntary action” can lose up to 50% of their wage.
