Siarhei Kavalenka, activist of the Conservative-Christian Party Belarusian Popular Front was hospitalized from jail because of problems with his heart. His comrade Barys Khamaida addressed the city prosecutor with the demand to stop the unlawful prosecution of the activist aimed at spoiling his health, breaking him as a person and doing harm to his pregnant wife and 6-year-old son.

Barys Khamaida stresses that Mr. Kavalenka was serving the second arrest term in a row and had to announce a hunger-strike of protest against unlawful arrest for the second time.

“On 25 March, the Freedom Day, Siarhei Kavalenka was sentenced to 7 days of arrest for coming to the central square of Minsk with three white-red-white flags to celebrate the greatest holiday of our Fatherland. On 1 April, he was mockingly detained and arrested, just 5 minutes after his release from jail after the arrest. The detention was allegedly connected to violation of the regime of his personal restraint term, to which he was sentenced in 2010. I think that Siarhei Kavalenka is subject to violent persecution because of his political convictions.”

Mr. Kavalenka had to stop the hunger-strike after the hospitalization (he kept it for 10 days). Now he is getting medical treatment. However, after its end he will have to return to jail, to serve the whole term of the arrest. He intends to continue the hunger-strike there.
