Yauhen Vaskovich, journalist of the ‘Babruiski kurier’ newspaper and Belarusian Christian Democracy candidate in the local council elections, was arrested by the police for waving the national white-red-white flag at the hockey match at ‘Babruisk Arena’ on 18 April. He was reportedly taken to a back office and beaten by the police. The youth was also threatened with expulsion from Mahiliou Pedagogical University.

Yauhen Vaskovich was then taken to the police station and had to stand trial the next morning.

‘The judge studied the police reports and said they were absurd. She said that the papers were improperly drawn up. I have prepared a complaint against the policemen’s actions and I am going to submit it in the near future,’ says the candidate.
