Over a thousand human rights activists and lawyers from all over the world participate in the World Congress against the Death Penalty opened today in Geneva, Switzerland. Belarus is represented by activists of the Human Rights Activists against the Death Penalty campaign Valiantsin Stefanovich and Tatsiana Reviaka.
According to the Congress’s coordinators, 58 countries still use the death penalty, executing 6,000 sentences a year.
The Congress was initiated by the ‘Together against the Death Penalty’ Association and sponsored by the Swiss government and the World Coalition against the Death Penalty, the Itar-TASS news agency reports.
