An activist of the United Civil party Dzianis Dzianisau faces up to three years of imprisonment, RFE/RL informs. He is charged with organizing group actions violating public order. Dzianis Dzianisau is kept behind the bars for the third week.
On 2 March the activist was visited by a lawyer Piatro Kavalenka in Vitsebsk remand prison. ’He is charged with organizing actions violating public order and counteracting authorities by alleged printing leaflets and posters’, the lawyer said. According to Kavalenka, the actions mentioned in the case of Dzianisau, took place on 18 June 2006 in Vitsebsk. A group of youth activists of an unregistered organization Bunt tried to hold an oppositional rally. Activists unfurled a white-red-white flag.
A criminal action for Dzianisau’s participation in that episode was brought up in October last year. Dzianis Dzianisau was detained in a train on 16 February on his way to Homel. First the activist was kept in Homel remand prison, and then he was taken to Vitsebsk remand prison #2.
According to the lawyer, the activist doesn’t take the blame. Mr. Kavalenka believes there are good prospects in defense of his client.
