The Hrodna Regional Court has predictably rejected a cassation appeal by activist Yury Hlebik, who tried to challenge a decision by the Śvislač District Court of November 19. The activist was fined 4.5 mln rubles for taking part in a memorial event held on October 31. Yury Hlebik argued in his appeal that he did not violate the law, saying that it were the police who broke the rules and therefore the District Court’s ruling was illegal. However, the judge approached the appeal from a formal viewpoint and dismissed it after a short break.

Earlier, the District Court fined Viktar Sazonau, Edvard Dmukhouski, Uladzimir Khilmanovich and Vitold Ashurak, finding them guilty of being involved in the same peaceful assembly.

Over the past 10 years, the Regional Court has not met a single appeal by local opposition and civil society activists.
