The Human Rights Center "Viasna" has released on DVD a documentary entitled The Dissident telling about the famous Belarusian political prisoner Mikhail Kukabaka.

The film shows the personality of the protagonist, which helped him not to submit to the Soviet totalitarian system, not to break down in the unbearable prison conditions, to conquer fear, to preserve dignity and not to abandon personal beliefs during the 17 years that Mikhail Kukabaka spent in prisons, labor camps and psychiatric hospitals.

The film was presented on October 30 last year, on the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Political Repression, in the home city of Mikhail Kukabaka, Babruisk, a location of the part of filming during his visit to Belarus in April 2014.

The Human Rights Center "Viasna" would like to thank the entire creative team of the project – scriptwriter Palina Stsepanenka, director Viktar Tratsiakou, cameraman Uladzimir Kaspiarovich, designer Dzmitry Kaminski and author of the project Iryna Prakopchyk. Our special thanks are for Ales Bialiatski, who researched Mikhail Kukabaka’s biography, and it was thanks to his perseverance that the name of a famous dissident is now revived for today’s Belarus.
