26.06.2014 Legislation on lawyers: What changes needed?
It has been over two years since the entry in force of the Law “On the Legal Profession and Activities of Lawyers in the Republic of Belarus” and other regulations adopted pursuant to it. Despite the fact that this law is sufficiently “fresh”, the need for changes in the Belarusian legislation on lawyers has been prompted by both national and foreign experts. In the application of this Act, this need has been also perceived by the lawyers’ community and the state.

13.03.2014 State intends to tighten control over barristers
March 15, 2014 a pre-election report conference of members of the Minsk City Bar Association will take place in Minsk. Its agenda includes amendments and supplements to the Charter of Bar Association (concerning the disciplinary committee) and the Regulation on Disciplinary Commission. There are reasons to believe that the adoption of these amendments and supplements will make lawyers more dependent on the state. The barristers are offered to limit the frames of their legal activities with their own hands.

Human rights activist Siarhei Housha received a letter signed by the head of the Secretariat of the Constitutional Court A. Karavai, stating that his appeal was considered on the grounds of Art. 22 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus on Judicial System and Status of Judges and the Law of the Republic of Belarus "On applications of citizens and legal persons".

The Office of the Prosecutor General forwarded to the Minsk Regional Prosecutor's Office the appeal of Deputy Chairman of the Minsk regional organization of the UCP Viktar Malochka concerning a violation by the district state-owned newspaper “Shakhtsior” of the Law “On Applications of Citizens”.

February 2 Chairman of the Homel regional branch of the Belarusian Leftist Party "Fair World" Uladzimir Siakerka sent electronic appeal to Chairman of Homel City Executive Committee Piatro Kirychenka. Mr. Siakerka was outraged at receiving no response from the executive committee to his appeal of November 21, 2013, which is a violation of the law "On Appeals of Citizens and Legal Entities". The politician demands to be given an answer according to the law.

In fighting lawlessness citizens are in desperate need of support from mass media, says Liudmila Kuchura in an interview to the HRC "Viasna". She, together with her companions in misfortune, has been pestering state institutions for about 10 years now. Victims of lawlessness from different parts of Belarus united in their search for justice, which is lost in the corridors of the law enforcement. But the forces in the confrontation between them and the system are far from being equal.
