28.01.2013 UN Human Rights Committee expects measures taken in Kavaliou’s case
Mrs. Liubou Kavaliova, the mother of Uladzislau Kavaliou executed in March 2012, received a communication from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights saying that the UN officials are expecting information from the Belarusian government on measures taken to implement the Human Rights Committee’s decision in her son’s case. The information should be submitted by July 3, 2013.

08.01.2013 Landmark UN decision: Ales Bialiatski’s detention arbitrary, release and compensation requested
Paris-Geneva, December 21, 2012. At its 64th session, the United Nations (UN) Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) adopted decision A/HRC/WGAD/2012/39, published on November 23, in which it found that the detention of Mr. Ales Bialiatski, President of the Human Rights Centre (HRC) “Viasna” and FIDH Vice-President, was arbitrary.

28.12.2012 Center for Strategic Litigation submits 29 communications to UN Human Rights Committee within a year
Since the beginning of 2012, the Homel-based Center for Strategic Litigation NGO has initiated 28 new strategic lawsuits and submitted 29 communications to the UN Human Rights Committee, 10 of which have already been registered. During 2012, the Committee adopted four decisions on the complaints prepared by the Center, which found violations of certain rights of Belarusian citizens.
22.11.2012 UN Human Rights Committee rules in the case of Uladzislau Kavaliou
Mrs. Liubou Kavaliova, the mother of Uladzislau Kavaliou (Kovalev), executed for plotting and implementing a lethal blast in Minsk underground in April 2011, received the decision of the UN Human Rights Committee. The complaint was considered in less than a year. The Committee recognized that the investigation was conducted with numerous errors, Kavaliou was subjected to physical violence and forced to testify against himself, the court was not impartial and, most importantly, the right to life was violated.

The UN Human Rights Committee has registered a complaint submitted by deputy chairman of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” Valiantsin Stefanovich. The complaint deals with extremely poor detention conditions the human rights defender was subjected to during his arrest back in 2010.

“The Human Rights Committee, acting under article 5, paragraph 4, of the Optional Protocol to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, is of the view that the facts before it disclose a violation by Belarus of article 19 and article 21 of the Covenant,” says the UN Human Rights Committee in its Views adopted on July 27, 2012, as a response to the complaint submitted by Baranavichy pro-democratic activists Siarhei Housha, Viktar Syrytsa and Viktar Meziak.
05.07.2012 The UN Human Rights Council creates a Special Rapporteur on Belarus
Today, the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted a resolution on the situation of human rights in Belarus expressing concerns over the prompt deterioration of the situation of human rights in the country following the Presidential elections of December 2010, and establishing a mandate for a Special Rapporteur to monitor the situation, work with the authorities and the domestic civil society, and report back to the Council and to the General Assembly.
