14.04.2011 Horki: socio-political newspaper Uzgorak warned by Ministry of Information
On 14 April the chief editor of the newspaper, Halina Budnaya, received an appropriate letter from the ministry. According to it, the warning is issued for a number of reasons. The first of them is the failure of the newspaper staff to inform the ministry about the change of the editor after the death of the previous one, well-known journalist and civil activist Eduard Brokarau. The other ones are the absence of the bar-code in several issues of the newspaper and alleged violations in the activities of the internet version of the newspaper.
14.04.2011 Police detain journalist present at mournful action in Maladechna
On 13 April an unauthorized mournful action dedicated to the terrorist act in the Minsk metro took place near St. Joseph’s Church in Maladechna. Invitations to this action were distributed through social nets. About one hundred Maladechna residents gathered for the action. No speeches were delivered, people just stood silent for some time.

The Ministry of Justice wants the BAJ to explain “the legal grounds for activity of the International Federation of Journalists on the territory of Belarus” and the grounds on which its press-cards s are issued by the Belarusian Association of Journalists. This is stated in the official letter of the ministry, dated 1 April and signed by A.Kirychenka, Chair of the NGOs department.

Lida blogger and former employee of Hrodna government-owned newspaper Yauhen Kutsko is reportedly suspected of folk-leasing for a publication in the www.vkontake.ru social network, mocking the local state-run newspaper “Lidskaya gazeta”.

Situation with freedom of journalistic activity in Belarus has deteriorated dramatically since recently. The BAJ members from Mahilou – Uladzimir Laptsevich, Ales Asiptsou, and Dzmitry Salauyou – were detained and sentenced to 3 – 7 days of arrest under administrative law on the eve of the Freedom Day, celebrated on March 25th. A TV cameraman Uladzislau Staravierau was detained for several hours in the city of Vitsiebsk. All the media workers, mentioned above, were detained upon far-fetched pretexts. Once again, the police and the plain-clothes men prevented journalists from reporting on street actions on March 25, 2011.

On 24 March, Ales Asiptsou, reporter of the BelaPAN major news agency, was sentenced to three days of administrative arrest for “disorderly conduct”. The verdict pronounced by Mahiliou court says the journalist was urinating not far from his house.
22.03.2011 Radio Racyja reporter questioned by KGB
Barys Haretski, journalist of the Radio Racyja, was detained today in Minsk Partyzanski District Court, where the trial of Mikita Likhavid is taking place. The reporter was taken to the KGB central office and interrogated.
