02.08.2012 International Day of Solidarity with Civil Society of Belarus to be marked in many countries on 4 August

The International Day of Solidarity with the Civil Society of Belarus will be marked for the first time on 4 August 2012. It was announced by a wide coalition of NGOs from different country which are members of the Committee on International Control over the Human Rights Situation in Belarus. A year ago, on 4 August 2011, the leading Belarusian human rights defender Ales Bialiatski, the head of the Human Rights Center “Viasna”, was arrested and subsequently sentenced to 4.5 years of imprisonment.

The Human Rights Center “Viasna” is calling on its colleagues, representatives of international and Belarusian human rights organizations to arrange actions of solidarity with Ales Bialiatski, head of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” and vice-president of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), who was arrested on August 4, 2011 and later sentenced to four and a half years of imprisonment for his human rights activities.

The office of the Corrections Department in the Mahilou region sent an answer to the complaint filed to the Department of Corrections of Belarus.

A number of civil activists and human rights defenders of Russia and several other countries have launched an online campaign to mark August 4, the day when Viasna leader and FIDH vice-president Ales Bialiatski was arrested in 2011, International Day of Solidarity with the civil society and human rights movement of Belarus.

12.07.2012 Minsk City Court considers Bialiatski's appeal against a new fine

On12 April the Minsk City Court considers the appeal of the imprisoned head of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” Ales Bialiatski against the verdict of the Pershamaiski District Court of Minsk according to which he was sentenced to pay 140 million rubles of fine for an untimely payment of taxes.
