The book "Situation of Human Rights in Belarus in 2013" features an analysis of the major events that influenced the human rights situation in the country during the past year, as well as the most obvious and typical violations.

"In 2013, the situation with human rights in the country remained stably bad: the basic political and civil rights were extremely limited, rigid and authoritarian practices persisted, bringing an aggravation of systematic and systemic issues," says the foreword to the publication, which offers description of such problems as politically motivated persecution, the death penalty, use of torture, restrictions on freedom of expression, harassment of human rights defenders and the changes in the Electoral Code on the eve of this year’s local elections. The human rights situation in Belarus is also analyzed in an international context.

The review was prepared on the basis of complaints received by the Human Rights Center "Viasna" from victims of human rights violations, the facts documented by human rights defenders, as well as those reported in the media.

The book “Situation of Human Rights in Belarus in 2013" in its two language versions, Belarusian and English, is available for free in the office of the HRC "Viasna", and can be downloaded as a PDF-file from our website.
