On February 21, the Minsk City Court began hearing a criminal case against political prisoner Ihar Ilyash under Article 391-1 (discrediting Belarus) and Part 2 of Article 361-4 (promoting extremist activities) of the Criminal Code. Judge Siarhei Katser handles the case.

Recall that Ihar Ilyash's detention became known on October 22, 2024. Pro-government Telegram channels wrote that Ilyash was engaged in "assistance to extremist groups" — he gave interviews to independent media, and also allegedly "collected data for foreign intelligence services" — he gave comments to Ukrainian publications. Political prisoner and journalist Katsiaryna Bakhvalava is Ihar's wife.

European diplomats came to the Minsk City Court building today as a sign of support for the political prisoner and journalist.

"The freedom of speech must be guaranteed. Journalism is not a crime. 39 media workers are currently in prison in Belarus. All political prisoners must be released immediately and unconditionally," the EU Delegation to Belarus wrote.
