On 4 January representatives of the Horki administration held a “public discussion” concerning the maintenance of the territory of the town on the eve of the “Dazhynki-2012” festival which will take place in the city this year. The authorities decided to hold the discussion after local activists started collecting signatures against a massive felling of trees, planned by the authorities.
As it became known on 13 September, on 25 August Judge Chaplyhina had tried the Brest-based civil activist Zmitser Shurkhai in his absence. She found him guilty of participation in the picket in Horki and sentenced him to 10 days of arrest. The day he spent in the remand prison in Horki had been included in this term.
The Horki District Court sentenced Ivan Shyla, a Salihorsk-based activist of the Young Front, to 20 days of arrest, for participation in the picket near the penal colony where the Young Front leader Zmitser Dashkevich is serving his two-year term, being subject to cruel and degrading treatment by the colony administration.
About 30 people arrived to the colony in Horki on 2 August. They demanded that political prisoner Zmitser Dashkevich was allowed to meet with his lawyer. The colony's administration refuses to let the lawyer in until receiving a corresponding request from Dashkevich himself.
On 14 April the chief editor of the newspaper, Halina Budnaya, received an appropriate letter from the ministry. According to it, the warning is issued for a number of reasons. The first of them is the failure of the newspaper staff to inform the ministry about the change of the editor after the death of the previous one, well-known journalist and civil activist Eduard Brokarau. The other ones are the absence of the bar-code in several issues of the newspaper and alleged violations in the activities of the internet version of the newspaper.
’It is not easy to find about the places of work of members of the Horki District Election Commission’, says the correspondent of the newspaper Uzgorak Illia Zaranok. When I asked to ‘disclose the secret’, the officer of the Horki District Executive Committee and the member of the Horki District Election Commission Katsiaryna Karotkaya answered that this information was accessible for workers of the district executive committee only and the electors didn’t need to know it.
