04.12.2008 Barysau: opposition activist is tried in absentia
At the end of November Sviatlana Danilava, a well-known distributor of the independent press from Barysau, received by mail the verdict of Pershamaiski district court of Minsk by which she was fined 700 000 rubles (about $330) for distribution of pre-electoral leaflets with calls to boycott. In the verdict it is also stated that she had not come to the trial.
29.09.2008 Barysau: Half thousand ballot papers in mobile ballot box
Observers Zmitser Babitski and Zmitser Matselski registered an unjustifiably high number of ballot papers in the mobile ballot box for voting at home. That happened at polling station # 45 (secondary school # 23), in Barysau rural district # 63. According to their calculations, the real turn out, including early voting, at this polling station with the total number of voters 2, 814, was no more than 30 per cent. However, half a thousand ballot papers was found in the mobile ballot box for voting at home. The observers are preparing a complaint to the prosecutor’s office.
27.09.2008 Barysau: Participation in election is not right but obligation
There are leaflets on the doors of apartment buildings in Trusava Street (precinct # 20 of Barysau city district # 62) saying that, “under the Election Code of the Republic of Belarus, participation in the election is the OBLIGATION of every citizen of the Republic of Belarus of 18 years and above”.
25.09.2008 Barysau: Reporters under observation
Journalists of the international channel France 24 visited Barysau today, where they covered the campaign of Viktar Harbachou, head of the movement For Free Development of Entrepreneurship and candidate in district # 62. The reporters visited several polling stations where they observed early voting. According to Harbachou’s, all movements of the journalists around the town were followed by the “competent” bodies.
20.09.2008 Barysau: Rayon executive committee instructed top managers
On September 18th Barysau rayon executive committee gathered a conference of all heads of enterprises, oranizations and institutions of the city and the rayon under the “coded" title “Preparation to the heating season”. However, the main issue on the conference agenda was the upcoming election.
19.09.2008 Barysau: voters do not attend meetings with uncontested candidates
Vasil Huryanau, CEO of Barysaukhlebpram state factory and candidate in Barysau rural district # 63, had to postpone or cancel his meetings with voters many times. The meetings which he managed to hold could hardly be called crowded.
