Several years ago the entrepreneur Mikalai Autukhovich was found guilty in evasion from payment of taxes for transporting passengers and luggage without registration of firm, which resulted in an exceptionally large loss to the budge of the Hrodna city. On 6 June 2006 he was sentenced to 3,5 years in medium security prison with confiscation of property and deprival of the right to business for five years. On 18 January 2008 the imprisonment with replaced with corrective labor. Belarusian human rights activists consider Autukhovich a prisoner of conscience.

03.03.2008 Aliaksei Marozau Detained for Solidarity with Aliaksandr Kazulin

On 2 March, at 7 p.m. the police detained an activist of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (headed by the political prisoner Aliaksandr Kazulin) while hanging out a banner with the demand to release Kazulin near the politician’s house in Starazhouskaya Street in Minsk. The police detained Pavel Marozau with the words: ‘Stand still, bitch, or we will shoot!’. He was guarded to the remand prison in Akrestsin Street and spent the night there. His parents were not informed. Today the activist has been taken to Tsentralny district court of Minsk.

Alaksandar Kazulin, who had been released by the administration of the colony "Vitba-3" for three days to bury his wife Iryna, was conveyed to Minsk on the night of February 26. Iryna had died after a serious illness on February 23.

Younger daughter of political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin addressed a letter to Alyaksandr Lukashenka. The girl asks to allow to “bury mother in accordance with Christian and simply human, moral laws. The dearest man for her – her husband – should pay last tribute to her.”

“I live in the same apartment building with the Kazulins. It was always pleasant to see them. It was seen, these people love each other, they are happy. They had everything: success, respect, love. There are many rather rich people in our apartment building. But most of them are gloomy, while this family stood out from them. Iryna had a talent of life,” Belarusian writer Svyatlana Aleksievich said in the interview to the newspaper “Nasha Niva.”

25.02.2008 Kazulin’s daughters go on hunger strike

Daughters of the political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin have gone on hunger strike at 2.00pm in protest of the fact the authorities refuse to release their father Alyaksandr Kazulin. Wife of the political prisoner Iryna Kazulina died of the serious disease on 23 February. The political prisoner wasn’t released nor given a leave to say farewell to his wife.

25.02.2008 Political prisoner denied right to bury his wife

Chief of the colony “Vitba-3” Vital Ahnistykau refused to speak with journalists on the morning of 25 February, but said to human rights activist Paval Levinau, he was preparing a refusal for Alyaksandr Kazulin of leaving the colony for funeral of his wife, who died on 23 February.

22.02.2008 Political Prisoner Aliaksandr Zdvizhkou to Be Released Today

On 22 February the Supreme Court of Belarus considered the cassation appeal of the former deputy editor of Zgoda newspaper Aliaksandr Zdzvizhkou. Earlier Zdvizhkou was sentenced to three years of imprisonment for publishing the Prophet Mohammed cartoons.
