20.04.2011 Journalist Uladzimir Laptsevich appeals judge's actions
On 19 April Uladzimir Laptsevich, a journalist with the BelaPAN information agency, lodged a claim with the Chair of the main justice department of the Mahiliou Region Executive Committee, Aliaksandr Maimusau. He appeals actions of a judge of the Leninski District Court of Mahiliou Lanchava and an answer of the Chair of the court, Kuzhaleva, to him.
20.04.2011 Human rights defenders and journalists tried at Frunzenski District Court of Minsk
Trials against civil activists from Hrodna and Vitsebsk (Aleh Barshcheuski, Volha Karach, Pavel Levinau, and Pavel Staneuski) were held at the Frunzenski District Court of Minsk on 20 April.
14.04.2011 Mahiliou Region Court leaves Dzmitry Salauyou in KGB register
On 14 April the Mahiliou Region Court considered the appeal of a civil activist Dzmitry Salauyou against the verdict of the Leninski District Court which left in force the warning issued to him by the KGB for participation in the 19 December protest rally in Minsk and organization of the street actions in Mahiliou that “could result in mass riot”.
13.04.2011 Homel: first fine for refusal from fingerprinting
On 13 April Halina Sytsko, Judge of the Homel Savetski District Court, fined Vasil Paliakou, Chair of the Homel region organization of the United Civil Party, 875,000 rubles (about $287) for refusing to be fingerprinted by the police.
12.04.2011 Mahiliou: sentence to Maksim Antsypovich left standing
On 12 April Uladzimir Navitaniuk, Judge of the Mahiliou Region Court, considered the appeal of Maksim Antsypovich against the fine imposed on him for participation in an unauthorized picket in Mahiliou on 16 January.
11.04.2011 Malaryta railway employee to stand trial for resisting forced fingerprinting
Ryhor Lukianchuk, railway employee from the town of Malaryta, Brest region, is to stand trial for violating Article 23.34 of the Administrative Code (“disobeying authority”), after he refused to undergo forced fingerprinting.
28.03.2011 Mahiliou court convicts journalist and BPF leader
On 28 March, Mahiliou Leninski District Court sentenced Uladzimir Laptsevich, reporter of the BelaPAN news agency, to 7 days of administrative arrest for disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
28.03.2011 Minsk court convicts March 25 detainees
Minsk Savetski District Court considered the cases of Viktar Ivashkevich, Mikola Dzemidzenka and Iryna Hubskaya, detained during the 25 March Freedom Day rally. Viktar Ivashkevich and Iryna Hubskaya faced charges for alleged disorderly conduct (Art. 17.1 of the Civil Code).
25.03.2011 Another fine to Vitsebsk opposition activist Barys Khamaida
Vitsebsk opposition activist Barys Khamaida has been fined BYR 1,050,000 for staging an unauthorized picket marking Freedom Day. This is his fourth fine on similar charges since 2 March.
25.03.2011 Vitsebsk activist Kavalenka sentenced to 7 days of arrest
Vitsebsk Chyhunachny District Court found local opposition activist Siarhei Kavalenka guilty of staging an unauthorized picket and disorderly conduct, and sentenced him to 7 days of administrative arrest.
25.03.2011 BelaPAN reporter sentenced to 3 days of arrest
On 24 March, Ales Asiptsou, reporter of the BelaPAN major news agency, was sentenced to three days of administrative arrest for “disorderly conduct”. The verdict pronounced by Mahiliou court says the journalist was urinating not far from his house.
25.03.2011 Administrative prosecution of Mahiliou 17-year-old opposition activist closed
On 24 March, Mahiliou juvenile delinquency commission considered the administrative case of local opposition activist Hanna Shkadun, charged with participation in an unauthorized solidarity picket on 16 January 2011. As a result, the charges were withdrawn due to the expiry of the statute of limitation.
24.03.2011 Russian journalist and HR defender sentenced to 3 days of arrest
Judge Inna Kokhava of Orsha District Court found Russian journalist and human rights defender Alexander Loshmankin of disorderly conduct and sentenced him to 3 days of administrative arrest.
23.03.2011 Judge Shykarou fines Vitsebsk activist Khamaida for third time
On 23 March, Vitsebsk opposition activist Barys Khamaida was fined BYR 1,050,000 for allegedly arranging an unauthorized picket in the city center. This is Khamaida’s third fine within a month on the similar charges pronounced by the same judge Uladzislau Shykarou of Vitsebsk Chuhynachny Court.
23.03.2011 Minsk court convicts activists for picket of solidarity with Dashkevich and Lobau
Minsk Maskouski Court sentenced youth activists Ivan Shyla and Ryhor Astapenia to 13 and 10 days of administrative arrest respectively for arranging a picket of support for Zmitser Dashkevich and Eduard Lobau outside the court building on 22 March.
