Representatives of the central office of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” have held an action of solidarity with Hrodna human rights defenders – Viasna members Viktar Sazonau, Uladzimir Khilmanovich and Belarusian Helsinki Committee activist Raman Yurhel – to express their support ahead of today’s consideration of an appeal against an absurd ruling by Hrodna Leninski District Court.
24.01.2013 BCD Navapolatsk activists stand trial for taking pictures with Bialiatski’s portrait (updated)
Yauhen Parchynski and Siarhei Malashonak, Navapolatsk activists of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party, are expected to stand trial today for illegal picketing. Local police says the evidence of the offense are the photos showing the activists with Ales Bialiatski’s portrait posted on a number of independent sites. Thus, the situation repeats that of Hrodna, where human rights defenders stood trial and were fined for doing the same thing.

14.01.2013 Disabled pensioner fined 3 million rubles for an attempt to set afire the head of the village executive committee
The Biaroza District Court fined Pavel Levashevich, a 89-year-old pensioner from the village of Sakalova in the Biaroza district who has a bad sight, a former prisoner of a German concentration camp, was sentenced to 3 million rubles of fine for an attempt to set afire himself and the head of the Sakalova village executive committee. Though Mr. Levashevich regrets about his deed, he thinks that the verdict is too severe:

Ukrainian human rights defenders declared an Internet action in support of the members of the Human Rights Center "Viasna" Uladzimir Khilmanovich and Viktar Sazonau and the member of the Belarusian Helsinki Committee Raman Yurhel who had been fined for publishing a photo of themselves with a portrait of the political prisoner Ales Bialiatski on the web.
10.01.2013 Svislach case: "regional court maintains the "rigid course"
The Hrodna Region Court issued a predictably negative ruling on the cassation appeal of the civil activist from Biaroza Siarhei Trafimchyk. The activist tried to appeal the verdict of the judge of the Svislach District Court Zhanna Salahubik of 13 December 2012, according to which he was sentenced to a fine of 800,000 rubles for participation in an action in the memory of the anti-Russian uprising of 1863-1864.
