In the Vitsebsk pre-trial prison Alena Kavalenka was assured that there were no delays with the sending of letters and they were checked within the legally allowed term, three days. However, on 1 February she received a letter dated 17 January. In this letter the hunger-striker Siarhei Kavalenka wrote that he was subject to forced feeding.
Tatsiana Seviarynets, a coordinator of the steering committee of the Belarusian Christian Democracy Party (BCD), applied to the Vitsebsk Regional Procuracy with the request to hold a check-up at the Vitsebsk regional tuberculosis hospital in the settlement of Bahusheusk. According to her information, rights of patients are violated there. In particular, they are threatened with repressions for any complaints about the conditions and medical treatment.
Vitebsk resident Pyotr Ivanov, a citizen of the Russian Federation, representative of the party "United Russia" and the activist of the civil campaign "Speak Truth," was fined 140,000 rubles for allegedly using foul language. He had been detained for handing out leaflets calling for solidarity with Siarhei Kavalenka.
At about 9 p.m. last evening, Vitsebsk police detained the wife and sister-in-law of local activist of the Conservative Christian Party “Belarusian Popular Front” Siarhei Kavalenka, as they were distributing leaflets in support of the hunger-striking prisoner, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reports, quoting Siarhei Kavalenka’s brother Vital.
Mrs. Alena Kavalenka, the wife of Vitsebsk activist of the Christian Conservative Party “Belarusian Popular Front” Siarhei Kavalenka, who is currently facing criminal charges for alleged violation of parole restrictions, has been interrogated by local police, the Nasha Niva newspaper reports.
