Vitsebsk police detain pregnant journalist
Vitsebsk police keep harassing the staff of local independent newspaper Vitsebski Kurier, as the weekly’s reporter Yulia Kanapliova was detained by road police on 20 May.
Yulia Vinakhodava, activist of the Young Front opposition movement, is facing expulsion from Vitsebsk State College of Technology for taking part in a picket of solidarity with imprisoned activist Siarhei Kavalenka outside the city’s pre-trial prison, www.charter97.org reports.
Activists of the Conservative-Christian Party Belarusian Popular Front Siarhei Kavalenka resumed his hunger-strike of protest against the unlawful prison sentence. At present he demands not only a review of his case, but the liberation of political prisoners and the removal of all bans on national symbols.
On 8 May the mother of civil activist Alena Semenchukova received a call from a man who introduced himself as a police officer. The man stated he wanted to take explanations from Alena and her younger brother concerning the forced disappearance of the former minister of internal affairs Yury Zakharanka.
