The first non-state TV channel for Belarusians BelSat begins broadcasting from December, 10. The Gomel KGB is trying to find out who of the local journalists is going to work for independent TV.

23.11.2007 Another Multi-Million Suit for Newspaper Article

Mikalai Charhinets, head of the Committee on International Affairs and National Security of the Council of Republic, started legal action on defending honor, dignity and business reputation against a journalist and BAJ member Aliaksandr Tamkovich and a private unitary publishing enterprise “Vremia Novostej”, publishing a newspaper “Novy Chas” (“New Time”).

14.11.2007 Police Return ‘Tovarishch’ Circulation 45 Days after Confiscation

On 13 November the police returned an issue of the non-state newspaper ‘Tovarishch’ (printed organ of the Party of Communists of Belarus) to its chief editor Siarhei Vazniak. The newspapers were taken away from the newspaper’s editorial office on 27 September.

Several Russian newspapers – Kommersant, Novaya Gazeta, Moskovskiy Komsomolets and Nezavisimaya Gazeta - were not listed in the subscription catalogue of the Belposhta (Belarusian Post) enterprise for the 1st half of 2008.

The authorities are going to do the following: the city dwellers are proposed to replace dishes with cable and terrestrial TV. It is surprising, but there hasn’t yet been any concrete order to remove the dishes. But the authorities are planning how to do it: during repair works.

08.11.2007 Hrodna: Prosecutor’s Office Pressurizes Journalist Ivan Roman again

On 8 November the journalist Ivan Roman was summonsed to the prosecutor’s office of Hrodna. The prosecutor presented to him a print-out from Roman’s telephone talks with the Bialystok office of the Polish Radio Racyja and asked whether the journalist was working for the radio without an accreditation. The journalist refused to answer. In his interview with RFE/RL he stated that he was not a correspondent of Radio Racyja. However, as a Belarusian citizen he sometimes comments different events for Racyja and other media.

02.11.2007 Vitsebsk: Police Confiscate ‘Narodnaya Volia’

On 30 October at the railway station of Vitsebsk the police detained Ales Pazniak and Ales Yemialyanau. In their bags the policemen found about 400 copies of the non-state newspaper Narodnaya Volia. The activists were taken to Chyhunachny district police department of Vitsebsk and kept there for two hours. Then the activists were released and the newspapers were confiscated. This confiscation is plainly illegal even according to the present legislation, as the newspaper has a state registration and has been printed in conformity with the Belarusian laws.

25.10.2007 Narodnaya Volia Journalists Can’t Go Abroad

Employees of the independent newspaper Narodnaya Volia can not receive the stamp that permits to go abroad for three weeks already. The department for citizenship and migration explains, the documents are checked by the Committee for State Security (KGB).

19.10.2007 Homelskaya Prauda Apologizes

On October 18th Chyhunachny court of Homel heard the suit of Leanid Sudalenka against state regional newspaper Homelskaya Prauda. BAJ member Leanid Sudalenka sued the state paper to defend his honor and dignity. Alena Alenchanka, representative of the newspaper, agreed to publish disclaimer of the information published in the newspaper on August 2nd, without court hearing.

18.10.2007 Magazine Editor Released Early

On October 17th Ihar Bantsar, editor of “Magazyn Polski na uchodzstwie” magazine, was released early from Hrodna remand jail.
