The first annual Week Against the Death Penalty was held by the Human Rights Center "Viasna" in 2013 as part of the campaign “Human Rights Defenders Against the Death Penalty in Belarus,” which was launched in 2009 with the aim of ending this inhumane form of punishment and help Belarus share European values. Unfortunately, Belarus is still the only country in Europe and the former Soviet Union which pronounces death verdicts and executes people.
