Freelance journalist detained in Rečyca

Freelance journalist Kanstantsin Zhukouski was detained yesterday in the town of Rečyca, Homieĺ region, while interviewing local residents outside the municipal community center. The journalist says he was approached by police officers, who neither introduced themselves nor explained the reasons for the detention, and offered to follow them to the police station. “I showed them my ID and explained everything, but it didn’t work,” says Kanstantsin Zhukouski.

Over the past years, the journalist has been repeatedly prosecuted for performing his professional activities. To date, he has been fined a total of over 77 million rubles (USD 3,800).

Since the beginning of 2016, Kanstantsin Zhukouski has already stood six trials.

On March 17, he was again punished by a fine of 7.35 million rubles.
