This night several dozens of posters with the demand to release Mikalai Statkevich have been posted all over Vitsebsk. This is the way his Vitsebsk sympathizers decided to congratulate him on his 58th birthday and remind the public about the existence of political prisoners in Belarus, one of whom Mr. Statkevich currently is.

August 12, Mikalai Statkevich turns 58 years old. The ex-presidential candidate was taken into custody on December 20, 2010. May 26, 2011, the Leninski District Court of Minsk sentenced him to six years in a high-security penal colony under Article 293, part 1 of the Criminal Code (organization of mass riots). January 12, 2012 the conditions of the imprisonment were toughened for him – Mr. Statkevich was transferred from penal colony No. 17 in Shklou to prison No. 4 in Mahiliou, where he is kept in solitary confinement.
