Several publications posted on the website of the Human Rights Center “Viasna” were distorted, after hackers gained unauthorized access to the website last evening. The hacker attack affected all the three language versions.

In particular, the attackers falsified yesterday’s top story on the campaign for the abolition of the death penalty, slanting the article in favor of the punishment. Several other top stories were also distorted.

However, the results of the attack were corrected and the website is now operating in a regular mode.

Last morning, hackers attacked the independent news website www.belaruspartisan.org. The attack was reportedly committed by persons who claimed to be adherents of the Anonymous group. As a result of the attack, the hackers posted a message expressing threats towards the websites of “Viasna” and “Charter-97.”

On 2 March, the same means were used to post a false message on the website of Viasna’s Mahiliou office.

The facts show that the current regime keeps silencing human rights defenders, using all means available to undermine human rights activities and civil society in general. It is worth noting that all the three websites attacked by hackers over the past few days (www.belaruspartisan.org, www.charter97.org and www.spring96.org) were blacklisted by the authorities as featuring extremist content.

To human rights defenders, the challenges are yet another sign of the efficiency of our activities, adding up to our strength, competence and unity. The Human Rights Center “Viasna” will continue disseminating unbiased information on human rights issues in the country.
