‘Speak Truth’ passes to Minsk authorities signatures for naming a Minsk street in honor of Vasil Bykau

Officers of the Minsk city executive committee accepted 105,000 signatures in favor of renaming a Minsk street in honor of the well-known Belarusian writer.

The leader of the civil campaign Speak Truth, Uladzimir Niakliayeu, passed to the Minsk CEC 5,000 original signatures. Later, officials accepted 100,000 signatures more, scanned and copied from originals, RFE/RL reports.

The signatures were taken by Andrei Sery, the letter department deputy chief.

On 9 July, the police seized 20,000 signatures during a search of the car of an activist of Speak Truth, Mikhas Bashura. Earlier, the apartment where Speak Truth kept 50,000 signatures was robbed. Only the signatures were stolen from the apartment. On May 18, the Belarusian security services seized 10,000 signatures from the campaign’s office.
