On 31 January the citizens of Poland, teachers Piotr Borania and Galina Zajkowska were deported from Belarus. The official reason is that their having moved to a new apartment.

A journalist of Gazeta Wyborcza Andrei Pachobut commented to RFE/RL on the deportation: ‘The Union of Poles in Belarus (UPB) has started preparing to its seventh assembly, scheduled for 14-15 in the Polish House in Baranavichy. As it is the first great event in Brest region for the recent years, the secret services are getting more active. For instance, this time they found some reason for actual closedown of Ihnat Dameika School of the Union of Poles in Belarus.’

Bear in mind that at the end of 2008 the Polish priests Jan Branowski, Andrzej Krawczyk and Jan Skaneczny were deported from the towns of Halynka, Slonim and Porazau respectively (all located in Hrodna oblast that borders on Poland).
