Nomination of candidates to the Council of the Republic begins

Nomination of candidates to the upper chamber of the Belarusian parliament, the Council of the Republic of the 4th convocation, began on August 17th.  
Mikalai Lazavik, secretary of the Central Election Commission, informs, candidates to the Council of the Republic can be nominated by presidiums of local councils and corresponding executive committees. No less than two thirds of the local council’s presidium and the executive committee should participate in the joint session nominating the candidates. 
Presidium of the council of deputies and the corresponding executive committee can nominate only one candidate to the Council of the Republic, but the same candidate can be nominated by several presidiums of the local councils and executive committees. 
Candidates to the Council of the Republic should be citizens of Belarus, be at least 30 year old, and should have lived in a corresponding region, or Minsk city, for no less than 5 years. 
Citizens who under the law are not entitled to occupy posts in the state apparatus because their conviction was not removed from official records cannot become candidates to the Council of the Republic. 
Candidates to the Council of the Republic can be dominated until September 15th. Registration of candidates will be held on September 16th – 20th. 
The Council of the Republic consists of 64 people: 8 from each oblast and Minsk city, and 8 more are appointed by the President.
