Opposition candidates in Mahiliou continued pulling out of local elections, which began in Belarus on 9 January.

Iury Darashenka, a member of the Independent Union of Electronic and Other Industries Union, became at least the fourth opposition candidate to withdraw from the poll in the city in eastern Belarus.

’Our people were barred from election commissions’, the activist told BelaPAN. ‘They were constantly creating obstacles for us. My speech broadcast by a radio station became the final point of my campaign, after which I informed the city and regional election commissions about my decision to pull out. There’s no sense in continuing taking part in the elections. It’s already clear who will win the seat.’
