Veranika Charkasava, journalist of Salidarnasts (Solidarity) newspaper died two years ago. On October 20, 2004 she was murdered in her Minsk apartment. The killer made more than 40 stabs. The criminal case is still being investigated, the killer has not been found.
In the end of December 2005 Siarhei Ivanou, head of the prosecutor’s department for serious crimes, suspended the preliminary investigation of the case “in conjunction with failure to reveal an individual which could be indicted for the crime”.
The journalist wrote on society and political issues and carried out journalist’s investigations in the spheres of crime and politics. Veranika was brave in expressing her opinion, she was always fast to find urgent and accurate information, and she was ever afraid to criticize.
The journalists’ community believes the Charkasava’s murder could be connected with her professional activity. The police investigated only the domestic homicide version.
